Why prices vary
GEO is not one deliverable. A small baseline can review a fixed question set and a handful of pages. A multi-market program may include research, technical implementation, expert interviews, authority development, analytics and repeated observations. Price follows the number of decisions and evidence items, not a generic number of “optimized words.”
The six main scope levers
| Lever | What expands the work |
|---|---|
| Markets and languages | Separate search context, terminology, sources and review. |
| Commercial entities | More services, products, locations, experts or integrations. |
| Query universe | More intents, competitors, platforms and repeat captures. |
| Implementation | Templates, content, schema, redirects, analytics and QA. |
| Evidence | Interviews, approvals, case artifacts and independent corroboration. |
| Measurement | Server data, consent, CRM fields, dashboards and qualification review. |
Three common project shapes
Diagnostic
A fixed baseline, technical/entity review and prioritized evidence pack. Useful before a redesign or when the team needs to choose a first commercial cluster.
Pilot
Research plus implementation for one service or topic cluster, followed by production QA and a defined observation period.
Program
Multiple clusters, authority work, analytics integration and repeated reporting with an editorial and development cadence.
What a proposal should price separately
- Discovery and baseline measurement.
- Page or template implementation.
- Subject-matter interviews and editorial review.
- Structured data and technical remediation.
- Independent profile or authority work.
- Analytics, lead attribution and dashboard setup.
- Ongoing observation and reporting cadence.
Budget questions that prevent surprise
Ask how many pages, questions, markets, review rounds and platforms are included. Confirm whether development is hands-on or advisory. Identify who supplies factual evidence and who approves regulated or legal claims. Define what happens when a technical dependency sits outside the provider's control.
Compare proposals by output
A lower price may cover only recommendations; a higher one may include production changes and measurement. Normalize quotes into a scope sheet before comparing: inputs, outputs, owners, timeline, exclusions and acceptance tests.
Costs that often sit outside the quote
Budget separately for client-side development, translation, legal or clinical review, analytics licences, CRM work, original research and third-party publication fees where applicable. A responsible proposal should name these dependencies even when another supplier owns them. Otherwise a reasonably priced audit can appear expensive later simply because implementation, approval and evidence production were never included in the original comparison.
“Improve AI visibility” is not an acceptance criterion. A crawlable page set, approved entity map, fixed query baseline, evidence register and validated attribution flow are.
A responsible starting point
When uncertainty is high, begin with the smallest diagnostic that can change a commercial decision. Expand only after it identifies a real constraint and the team can supply the evidence and implementation capacity required to address it.
